“The HeartMark is a powerful symbol that allows us to connect more deeply to our inner selves and to each other”

HeartMark Yogalates™
Heartmark Yogalates is an interdisciplinary approach that combines yoga, pilates, ballet, and the powerful heartmark connection for a satisfying whole body and heart routine that invigorates without pain.
We took from the yoga tradition its beautiful philosophies and meditative goals that permit us to focus on our bodies and clear our minds from distractions. We also borrowed the emphasis on breathing and stretching.
We took from pilates the focus on the core of the body, making sure to engage it throughout the exercises while maintaining proper alignment.
We took from ballet the physiological sequence of stretching and strengthening the body gradually from the bottom up. This way each muscle that is connected to the muscle just below it receives the right amount of small stretches and strengths in preparation before its turn to stretch and strengthen further. We also borrowed from ballet the attitude that we should feel like beautiful dancers inside, no matter what we do.
Finally, we added the HeartMark connection to help us focus better, so that we can connect to our own body and to each other. In our poses, we find many ways to make a heart with our own body, or with each other. We can also move the heart or we can draw hearts. In addition to specific heart positions and movements, we explore six heart principles that remind us of our spiritual and physical goals of connectivity.
We took out from yoga the postures that hurt the wrists. We also took out the routines that change the height and position of the body from one pose to another. These can be needlessly challenging and uncomfortable. The poses tend to be uncomfortable because some body parts are not ready to pose in that angle. Instead we do the same stretches, but in a more logical sequence. That way the body prepares for each next pose while doing a previous pose. In the mean while, the body gains energy and strength. Additionally, this progressive sequence seems more time efficient. We can stretch and strengthen more body parts at a comfortable pace because we spend less time “getting into pose.”
Because the challenges build gradually, all in one lesson, success builds comfortably. Students that are new to exercise will benefit just as much as the most fit athlete. Students always feel energized, taller, and stronger after class as well as the next day.
People certainly benefit from yoga, pilates, and ballet. Each fitness tradition offers wonderful benefits. In fact, we want our students to know the terms, poses, and philosophies of these individual fitness philosophies. But for those who found something bothersome about one type of class or another, there is now the HeartMark Yogalates, an intelligent, thoroughly responsible program.
